Recently I was featured in Creative Freedom – a book created by the founders of Rocketspark, all about helping graphic designers and creative business owners build sustainable, fulfilling creative businesses.
As someone who has spent years quietly building Designerbloom, working with beautiful small businesses, and trying to create work that genuinely helps people… it felt really special to be included.
If you’ve followed my journey for a while, you’ll know how much I love Rocketspark as a platform. I’ve been a Rocketspark Gold Partner for years now, and all of my award-winning websites are built using their system. But beyond the websites themselves, I’ve always appreciated how supportive they are of creatives and small business owners.
So being featured in a book designed to encourage and support fellow designers honestly felt pretty surreal.
What is Creative Freedom?
Creative Freedom is a book written by Rocketspark founders Jeremy and Grant Johnson. It's for graphic designers, freelancers and creative business owners navigating the real side of running a creative business.
Not just the “pretty portfolio” side, but the actual behind-the-scenes parts too:
working with clients, pricing your services, boundaries, confidence, processes, burnout, creativity, growth… all the things most creatives quietly figure out as they go.
It’s packed with practical advice, encouragement, and insights from people within the creative industry, and I genuinely think it would be such a valuable read for:
new designers
freelancers
small creative studios
or anyone trying to build a creative business that actually feels sustainable.
*note!
I realise this statement (taken from an early-days interview with Rocketspark) gives the impression that I started my business through Facebook. As much as I respect anyone who has the initiative to do this, this isn't my story. I came from an established career in Graphic Design beginning in 2002, which lead on to Designerbloom. I took a long break while my children were little, and I slowly moved back into the world of design by offering low-cost logos as mentioned above.
Why this meant so much to me
Running a creative business can feel surprisingly vulnerable sometimes.
So much of what we create is personal. We care deeply about our clients, their businesses, and getting things right. Most of us aren’t huge agencies with giant teams, we’re real people pouring our energy into meaningful work behind the scenes.
Designerbloom has always been built around thoughtful branding, calm collaboration, and helping small businesses feel more confident visually. I’ve never been the loudest person online, so moments like this feel extra meaningful because they quietly acknowledge all the years of work, care and creativity that happen behind closed doors.
And honestly? Seeing my name printed inside a book alongside other creatives was a bit of a pinch-me moment.
If you’re a creative business owner, I highly recommend it
Whether you’re just starting out or have been in business for years, I think this book is one of those resources that makes you feel a little more supported and understood as a creative person trying to build something meaningful.
